The terms “difficult people”, “workplace bullies”, passive-aggressive personalities and psychopaths are familiar in workplace discussions. As long as there are people working in close proximity and interacting on a daily basis, there are people whose behaviours are problematic for others as well as for themselves. “ Toxic” is a term used to describe behaviours that may occur regularly with effects that are more far reaching than an occasional bad day at the office.
Toxic personalities are described as individuals who demonstrate a pattern of counter productive work behaviours that debilitate individuals, work teams and organisations. The behaviours that define these individuals include negative attitudes, rudeness, manipulation, blaming, criticising, inability to see other people’s perspectives and a sense of entitlement. These behaviours are often pervasive, causing serious damage in the work environment and can cause co-workers to feel angry, betrayed, fearful, or filled with self- doubt. Unrelenting stress from a toxic workplace can lead to intense and prolonged symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, intense self-doubt and depression.
