At an individual level sex and sexuality are a complex part of ‘self’, contributed to by our physical well-being, our socialisation, individual experience and experiences, and values and beliefs.  When two complex individuals join together sex and sexuality play an important role – for better or worse.

This workshop explores the role that sex and sexuality play in relationships, with a focus on exploring these issues when undertaking counselling with couples.

By the end of this workshop participants will:

  • Recognise the importance of raising sexual issues when undertaking counselling with all couples and considered at what point in the counselling it should be discussed.
  • Have an understanding of sexual anatomy and some of the common dysfunctions.
  • Have had exposure to one model of taking a sexual history.
  • Have explored the most common sexual difficulties encountered when counselling couples.  These include: 
    • Differences in libido.
    • Infidelity.
    • The impact of aging on sexual relationships.
  • Have considered links between the emotional, attachment and sexual relationship in the context of conducting counselling with a couple.
