This one day workshop will explore the theoretical and practical origins of Motivational Interviewing in the field of addictions, specifically alcohol and other drug addiction.   Participants will have the opportunity to critically examine the model and the underpinning research.  Participants will explore the limits of its use and when it is appropriate to be applied.

The workshop will cover:

  • The two phases of Motivational Interviewing
  • The five principals of Motivational Interviewing
  • The eight skills of Motivational Interviewing

The workshop will also link Motivational Interviewing with the Trans-theoretical Model (Stages of Change model) and Janis and Mann’s Decisional Balance approach, both of which are frequently used in Motivational Interviewing.

During the workshop participants will be exposed to DVDs showing Miller at work, and be involved in role plays using the approach.  The emphasis in the workshop will be on Phase 1 of Motivational Interviewing where change is explored.  Phase 2 (Negotiation and Planning) will be covered, but in less detail.  Participants will explore triggers to relapse and consider prevention of relapse.
