Working with Men

1 day

Men are less likely to seek help for emotional challenges than women. When they do present for counselling they often appear "resistant" and difficult to engage. Given that men tend to present at a point of crisis, it is imperative that counsellors have skills developed specifically to work with them.

This workshop is designed to offer positive and respectful strategies and tools for working with men to maximise outcomes, including an outline of the main principles used for engaging men. Participants will gain an understanding of how to ask questions eliciting the positive intentions men have for themselves and others, encourage the reflection of the effects of their behaviour on others, deconstruct some of the ideas that inform men's thinking and invite new ways of being, and teach men how to develop selfcare, self-awareness and emotive communication.

The workshop will provide a brief overview of men's lives within the context of male gender role socialisation. It will also draw from some innovative practices such as Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Narrative Therapy, and include models that tend to work well with men.
